On Monday, March 6th, Grammy-Award winning artist, Chance The Rapper announced a $1 million gift to Chicago Public Schools (CPS).
Chance met with Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner to discuss additional funding for CPS. “The talks were unsuccessful,” said Chance. In addition to the $1 million, Chance also donated $10,000 to the elementary school where he made the announcement. For every corporate donation of $100,000 to the district, Chance’s nonprofit Social Works Chicago will give another $10,000 to a local public school.
Chicago Public Schools is depending on the state to help with a $215 million budget shortfall, while the annual budget for CPS is a whopping $5.7 billion. While Chance’s $1 million may seem like a drop in the bucket, he says, “It’s a call to action.”
