After a contentious season of opt-out and Republican flip-flops on the Common Core standards, it was refreshing to see Fox News Sunday’s “Power Player of the Week” was a supporter of the standards and the new Core-aligned tests.
During the regular Sunday segment Chris Wallace interviewed Laura Slover, CEO of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), who also happens to be mother to a school-aged child. Slover explained what the new PARCC test is and is not:
The segment highlights the underlying aim of the Common Core: that all students deserve an equal opportunity at success and the necessary standards to guide them. Slover really hits on this intention when she says:
For too long in this country success has been really a function of what income level parents have and where kids grow up. We think it’s critical that all kids have opportunities whether they live in Mississippi, Massachusetts, Colorado or Ohio they should all have access to an excellent education and this is a step in the right direction.
