On Wednesday, February 1, 2017, seven families from North Philadelphia set out on a journey for their children’s education. We called our journey a “Freedom Ride” in honor of the original Freedom Riders from 1961. They set out on a journey to test the recently ratified law that made it illegal to have segregated interstate travel. We set out to test whether the Philadelphia Public School system was prepared to do whatever it takes to provide Black families with high-quality education options.
Watch our journey.
We are prepared to fight for our children because we have seen what’s possible in Washington D.C. We’ve seen Black educators create a school for Black children and achieve exceptional results. If they can do it in Washington, why can’t we do it in Philadelphia?
